Scale Overview
The Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale – SEIS was developed by Nicola S. Schutte, John M. Malouff, Livia E. Hall, Donald J. Haggerty, Joan T. Cooper, Charles J. Golden, & Liane Dornheim (1998). It is designed to measure Emotional Intelligence. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 33 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Appraisal and Expression of Emotion, Regulation of Emotion, Utilization of Emotion.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 33 to 165. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Emotional Intelligence: 33 – 99
- Moderate Emotional Intelligence: 100 – 132
- High Emotional Intelligence: 133 – 165
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.87 – 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
