De UCO is een observatie-instrument dat gebruikt kan worden om in de acute fase na een beroerte op een snelle en eenvoudige manier een algemene indruk te verkrijgen van de communicatieve vaardigheden, zowel verbaal als non-verbaal, van iemand met afasie. Op basis van deze informatie kan de therapeut een gericht communicatieadvies geven aan de omgeving, met daarin concrete adviezen waarop de communicatie met de
afasiepatiënt het beste kan plaatsvinden
