Het test protocol van de Kaikkonen Functional Scale bestaat uit een vragenlijst en een performance test. De 3 vragen gaan over de subjectieve beschrijving van het enkelletsel. De testen bestaan uit een tweetal klinische onderzoeken, een tweetal isokinetische krachtmetingen, een functionele test en een balanstest. De Functiescore kan gebruikt worden om onderscheid te maken tussen letsels die uitgebreidere behandeling behoeven en lichte letsels die na screening geen specifieke behandeling behoeven.
