Scale Overview
The Zones of Indifference Instrument – ZII was developed by S. T. Wilkes & J. M. Blackbourn (1981). It is designed to measure Zones of indifference of teachers to administrative directives. The scale is intended for use with Teachers.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = A directive you would comply with without question, 2 = A directive you would comply with but mentally question the authority of the administrator to issue, 3 = A directive issued by the administrator that you mentally question the authority of, but alter the application more in keeping with what you think should be done, 4 = A directive issued by the administrator that you question mentally and refuse compliance with unless forced to do so.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 134 to 536. Interpretation guidelines:
Wide Zone of Indifference (High Compliance): 134 – 234
Moderate Zone of Indifference: 235 – 335
Narrow Zone of Indifference: 336 – 436
Very Narrow Zone of Indifference (High Resistance): 437 – 536
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficient for the total instrument was 0.95. The two subscales were 0.92 each..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 25 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
