Scale Overview
The Youth Risk Behavior Survey – Physical Fighting Subscale (YRBS-PF) was developed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (1991). It is designed to measure Physical Fighting and Violence. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents (grades 9-12).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 3 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = 0 times, 1 = 1 time, 2 = 2 or 3 times, 3 = 4 or 5 times, 4 = 6 or 7 times (6 or more times for injury item), 5 = 8 or 9 times, 6 = 10 or 11 times, 7 = 12 or more times.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 21. Interpretation guidelines:
- No physical fighting involvement: 0 – 0
- Active physical fighting involvement: 1 – 21
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
