Scale Overview
The Young Child PTSD Screen – YCPS was developed by Michael Scheeringa, MD, MPH (2010). It is designed to measure Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The scale is intended for use with Caregivers of young children (ages 3-6).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Re-experiencing, Increased Arousal.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No, 1 = A little, 2 = A lot.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 6. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative Screen: 0 – 0
- Marginally Positive (Refer for further testing): 1 – 1
- Positive Screen (Refer for clinical treatment): 2 – 6
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
