Scale Overview
The Work and Social Adjustment Scale – W&SAS was developed by Mundt, J. C., Marks, I. M., Shear, M. K., & Greist, J. H. (2002). It is designed to measure Functional Impairment. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all, 1 = 1, 2 = Slightly, 3 = 3, 4 = Definitely, 5 = 5, 6 = Markedly, 7 = 7, 8 = Very severely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subclinical / Mild impairment: 0 – 9
- Significant functional impairment: 10 – 20
- Severe functional impairment: 21 – 40
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.70 – 0.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
