Scale Overview
The Wallace Self-Concept Scale – WSCS was developed by Gerald R. Wallace (1980). It is designed to measure Self-Concept. The scale is intended for use with Adults, college students, and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 15 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly describe by left word, 2 = Moderately describe by left word, 3 = Slightly describe by left word, 4 = Neutral, 5 = Slightly describe by right word, 6 = Moderately describe by right word, 7 = Strongly describe by right word.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 15 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Concept: 15 – 45
- Moderate Self-Concept: 46 – 75
- High Self-Concept: 76 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.81.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
