The Virginity Beliefs Scale – VBS was developed by Jonas Eriksson and Terry P. Humphreys (2009). It is designed to measure Virginity beliefs and motivations. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Gift, Stigma, Process.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subscale mean score range (calculated by summing subscale items and dividing by the number of items in that subscale): 1 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Gift: .89, Stigma: .92, Process: .80.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
