Scale Overview
The Value of Self-Expression Scale – VSES was developed by Heejung S. Kim & David K. Sherman (2007). It is designed to measure Value of self-expression. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Moderately disagree, 3 = Somewhat disagree, 4 = Neutral, 5 = Somewhat agree, 6 = Moderately agree, 7 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 11 to 77. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low value of self-expression: 11 – 33
- Moderate value of self-expression: 34 – 55
- High value of self-expression: 56 – 77
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
