Scale Overview
The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale – UWES-17 was developed by Wilmar B. Schaufeli & Arnold B. Bakker (2003). It is designed to measure Work Engagement. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Vigor, Dedication, Absorption.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = Almost never (A few times a year or less), 2 = Rarely (Once a month or less), 3 = Sometimes (A few times a month), 4 = Often (Once a week), 5 = Very often (A few times a week), 6 = Always (Every day).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 0. Interpretation guidelines:
- Scores are typically calculated as mean scores (sum of item scores divided by the number of items in the scale or subscale) ranging from 0 to 6, with higher scores indicating higher work engagement.: 0 – 0
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha: Vigor (.81-.90), Dedication (.88-.95), Absorption (.70-.88).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
