Scale Overview
The Unconditional Self-Regard Scale – USRS was developed by Betz, N. E., Wohlgemuth, E., Serling, D., Harshbarger, J., & Klein, K. L. (1995). It is designed to measure Unconditional Self-Regard. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Unconditional Self-Regard, Filler Items.
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Unconditional Self-Regard |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Moderately Disagree, 3 = Aren't sure or Neutral, 4 = Moderately Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 7 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 15 to 75. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Unconditional Self-Regard: 15 – 35
- Moderate Unconditional Self-Regard: 36 – 55
- High Unconditional Self-Regard: 56 – 75
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.86 – 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
