Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire – TPQ was developed by C. Robert Cloninger, Thomas R. Przybeck, Dragan M. Svrakic (1991). It is designed to measure Temperament and Personality Dimensions. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 100 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Harm Avoidance, Novelty Seeking, Reward Dependence, Persistence.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Harm Avoidance | 1,5,8,10,14,18,19,23,26,33,37,38,42,44,54,57,68,69,73,75,79,80,82,84,89,91,98 | 27 |
| Novelty Seeking | 2,4,9,11,13,16,17,20,21,22,24,28,29,30,32,35,40,43,46,47,48,50,51,55,56,60,62,65,66,70,72,76,78,81,85,87,96,99 | 38 |
| Reward Dependence | 3,6,7,12,15,25,27,31,34,36,58,61,64,67,71,74,83,86,88,90,93,94,100 | 23 |
| Persistence | 39,41,45,49,52,53,59,63,77,92,95,97 | 12 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous True/False format.
The scale includes 46 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Varies by subscale (typically Cronbach's alpha 0.70 – 0.85).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
