Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire – Diabetes Version (TSRQ-Diabetes)
Measures the degree to which a patient's motivation for diabetes self-care behaviors is autonomous versus controlled.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire – Diabetes Version (TSRQ-Diabetes) was developed by Geoffrey C. Williams, Richard M. Ryan, Edward L. Deci (1996). It is designed to measure Autonomous vs. Controlled Motivation. The scale is intended for use with Patients with diabetes.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Autonomous Regulation, Controlled Regulation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Autonomous Regulation | 2,3,7,10,13,16,18,19 | 8 |
| Controlled Regulation | 1,4,5,6,8,9,11,12,14,15,17 | 11 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all true, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = Somewhat true, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = Very true.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low endorsement of regulation style: 1 – 3
- Moderate endorsement of regulation style: 4 – 5
- High endorsement of regulation style: 6 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Autonomous Regulation alpha ~ 0.85, Controlled Regulation alpha ~ 0.79.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
