Scale Overview
The Traditional Family Ideology Scale – TFIS was developed by B. C. Muthayya (1967). It is designed to measure Traditional Family Ideology. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Moderately disagree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Moderately agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 40 to 200. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Traditionalism (Egalitarian/Democratic): 40 – 93
- Moderate Traditionalism: 94 – 146
- High Traditionalism (Autocratic/Patriarchal): 147 – 200

Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
