Scale Overview
The Tolerance for Ambiguity Scale – TAS was developed by Timothy A. Judge, Carl J. Thoresen, Vladimir Pucik, & Theresa M. Welbourne (1999). It is designed to measure Tolerance for Ambiguity. The scale is intended for use with Adults / Working Professionals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 18 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Slightly disagree, 4 = Neither agree nor disagree, 5 = Slightly agree, 6 = Agree, 7 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 18 to 126. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Tolerance for Ambiguity: 18 – 54
- Moderate Tolerance for Ambiguity: 55 – 90
- High Tolerance for Ambiguity: 91 – 126
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.70 – 0.80.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
