Scale Overview
The Theological Index was developed by Dean R. Hoge (1976). It is designed to measure Theological position and beliefs. The scale is intended for use with Protestant laity and clergy.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 53 items organized into 12 factors/subscales: Spiritual-Secular Dualism, Freewill Behavior, Otherworldliness, Scriptural Authority, Social Optimism, Ethicalism, Religious Nationalism, Creedal Assent, Religious Despair, Orientation to Growth and Striving, Devotionalism, Salience: Behavior.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree / Infrequently / Very little, 2 = Disagree / Fairly infrequently / Somewhat little, 3 = Agree / Fairly frequently / Somewhat much, 4 = Strongly Agree / Frequently / Very much.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low agreement / frequency: 1 – 2
- High agreement / frequency: 3 – 4

Administration
