Scale Overview
The The Liberal-Conservative Scale (L-C Scale) was developed by R. D. Coursey (1974). It is designed to measure Liberal-conservative religious attitudes among Roman Catholics. The scale is intended for use with Roman Catholic laypersons.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Pious submissiveness, Ecumenical attitudes, Marriage issues, Church rules, Styles of worship, Social rights.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 4-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 4 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 20 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 40 to 200. Interpretation guidelines:
- Liberal: 40 – 100
- Moderate: 101 – 140
- Conservative: 141 – 200

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.93.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
