Scale Overview
The The Empathy Quotient – EQ-40 was developed by Simon Baron-Cohen, Sally Wheelwright (2004). It is designed to measure Empathy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Strongly disagree, 1 = Slightly disagree, 2 = Slightly agree, 3 = Strongly agree.
The scale includes 19 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low (indicative of autism spectrum conditions): 0 – 29
- Average: 30 – 44
- Above Average: 45 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
