Scale Overview
The Teaching Anxiety Scale – TCHAS was developed by Parsons, J. S. (1973). It is designed to measure Teaching Anxiety. The scale is intended for use with Preservice and inservice teachers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 29 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Infrequently, 3 = Occasionally, 4 = Frequently, 5 = Always.
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 29 to 145. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Teaching Anxiety: 29 – 67
- Moderate Teaching Anxiety: 68 – 106
- High Teaching Anxiety: 107 – 145
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients ranged from 0.87 to 0.93.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
