Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Teacher Self-Efficacy Instrument – TSEI was developed by Susan J. Hillman (1986). It is designed to measure Teacher Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Teachers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 64 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Positive Internal, Positive External, Negative Internal, Negative External.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Positive Internal | 1,2,9,10,17,18,21,22,25,26,37,38,53,54,57,58 | 16 |
| Positive External | 3,4,11,12,19,20,23,24,27,28,39,40,55,56,59,60 | 16 |
| Negative Internal | 5,6,13,14,29,30,33,34,41,42,45,46,49,50,61,62 | 16 |
| Negative External | 7,8,15,16,31,32,35,36,43,44,47,48,51,52,63,64 | 16 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 16 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Attribution: 16 – 32
- Moderate Attribution: 33 – 48
- High Attribution: 49 – 64
- Very High Attribution: 65 – 80
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients ranged from 0.81 to 0.93 on each of the four subscales..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
