Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Teacher Locus of Control – TLC was developed by Janet S. Rose & Fred J. Medway (1981). It is designed to measure Teacher Locus of Control. The scale is intended for use with Teachers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Student Success (I+), Student Failure (I-).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Student Success (I+) | 1,4,7,8,10,12,16,19,22,24,25 | 11 |
| Student Failure (I-) | 2,3,5,6,9,11,13,14,15,17,18,20,21,23 | 14 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: A = Option A, B = Option B.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 25. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Internal Locus of Control (High External Beliefs): 0 – 8
- Moderate Internal Locus of Control: 9 – 17
- High Internal Locus of Control (Strong Belief in Personal Responsibility for Student Outcomes): 18 – 25
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of KR20: 0.71 (student success), 0.81 (student failure).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
