The Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire – TEOSQ was developed by Duda, J. L., & Nicholls, J. G. (1989). It is designed to measure Goal orientation in sport. The scale is intended for use with Athletes and sport participants.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 13 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Task Orientation, Ego Orientation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|

Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Orientation (Mean Score): 1 – 2
- Moderate Orientation (Mean Score): 3 – 3
- High Orientation (Mean Score): 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Task Orientation alpha ~ 0.80, Ego Orientation alpha ~ 0.80.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
