Scale Overview
The Syracuse University Self-Survey Opinion Battery (SUSSOB) was developed by N. M. Downie, C. R. Pace, & M. E. Troyer (1950). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward general education domains. The scale is intended for use with University students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 60 items organized into 10 factors/subscales: Politics, Government, Civic Relations, The World, Experts, Science, Philosophy, Music, Art, Literature.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Agree, 2 = No opinion at all, 3 = Disagree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low alignment with expert consensus: 0 – 20
- Moderate alignment with expert consensus: 21 – 40
- High alignment with expert consensus: 41 – 60
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
