Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Student-Teacher Relationship Scale – STRS was developed by Robert C. Pianta (2001). It is designed to measure Student-Teacher Relationship Quality. The scale is intended for use with Teachers rating their relationship with individual students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 28 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Closeness, Conflict, Dependency.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Closeness | 1,3,4,5,7,9,12,15,21,27,28 | 11 |
| Conflict | 2,11,13,16,18,19,20,22,24,25,26 | 11 |
| Dependency | 6,8,10,14,17 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Closeness (alpha 0.76-0.86), Conflict (alpha 0.86-0.92), Dependency (alpha 0.55-0.64).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
