Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Spirituality Index of Well-Being – SIWB was developed by Bruce B. Frey, Timothy P. Daaleman, & Vicki Peyton (2005). It is designed to measure Spiritual Well-Being. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Self-Efficacy, Life Scheme.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Self-Efficacy | 1,2,3,4,5,6 | 6 |
| Life Scheme | 7,8,9,10,11,12 | 6 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Neither Agree nor Disagree, 4 = Disagree, 5 = Strongly Disagree.
The scale includes 12 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Spiritual Well-Being: 12 – 27
- Moderate Spiritual Well-Being: 28 – 44
- High Spiritual Well-Being: 45 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Self-efficacy subscale alpha: 0.83-0.86; Life-scheme subscale alpha: 0.80-0.89; Total scale alpha: 0.87-0.91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
