The Spiritual Attitude and Involvement List – SAIL was developed by de Jager Meezenbroek, E. C., Garssen, B., van den Berg, M., Tuytel, G., van Dierendonck, D., Visser, A., & Schaufeli, W. B. (2012). It is designed to measure Spirituality. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Meaningfulness, Trust, Acceptance, Caring for Others, Connectedness with Nature, Transcendent Experiences, Spiritual Activities.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all / Never, 2 = Hardly at all / Seldom, 3 = Somewhat / Sometimes, 4 = To a reasonable degree / Regularly, 5 = To a high degree / Often, 6 = To a very high degree / Very often.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 26 to 156. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Spiritual Attitude and Involvement: 26 – 65
- Moderate Spiritual Attitude and Involvement: 66 – 117
- High Spiritual Attitude and Involvement: 118 – 156
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.74 to 0.89 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
