Scale Overview
The Somatization of Emotional Conflict Scale (SECS) was developed by Jeffrey J. Borckardt, John W. Younger, Brandon J. Adams, Michael R. Nash (2000). It is designed to measure Somatization. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 42 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = I have never had this problem, 1 = Less than once a month, 2 = Once or twice a month, 3 = Three or four times a month, 4 = More than four times a month.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 168. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Somatization: 0 – 42
- Moderate Somatization: 43 – 84
- High Somatization: 85 – 126
- Severe Somatization: 127 – 168
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
