Scale Overview
The Sociosexual Orientation Inventory – SOI was developed by Jeffry A. Simpson, Steven W. Gangestad (1991). It is designed to measure Sociosexual Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree / Never, 2 = Once Every Two or Three Months, 3 = Once a Month, 4 = Once Every Two Weeks, 5 = Once a Week, 6 = A Few Times Each Week, 7 = Nearly Every Day, 8 = At Least Once a Day, 9 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 10 to 1000. Interpretation guidelines:
- Maximally Restricted: 10 – 10
- Restricted to Moderately Unrestricted (Typical Range): 11 – 250
- Highly Unrestricted: 251 – 1000
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.75.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
