Scale Overview
The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale-3 – Internalization-General Subscale (SATAQ-3-I-G) was developed by J. Kevin Thompson, Patricia van den Berg, Merryl Roehrig, Angela S. Guarda, & Leslie J. Heinberg (2004). It is designed to measure Internalization of societal appearance ideals. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Definitely Disagree, 2 = Mostly Disagree, 3 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 4 = Mostly Agree, 5 = Definitely Agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 9 to 45. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Internalization: 9 – 21
- Moderate Internalization: 22 – 33
- High Internalization: 34 – 45
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
