The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire – Revised (SATAQ-R) was developed by Donald L. Cusumano & J. Kevin Thompson (1997). It is designed to measure Sociocultural influences on body image and appearance ideals. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Awareness, Internalization.
| Factor / Subscale |

N |
| Awareness |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Completely Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 4 = Agree, 5 = Completely Agree.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 21 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low internalization and awareness of societal appearance pressures: 21 – 48
- Moderate internalization and awareness of societal appearance pressures: 49 – 77
- High internalization and awareness of societal appearance pressures: 78 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Awareness subscale: alpha = .71 – .83; Internalization subscale: alpha = .88 – .90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
