Scale Overview
The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3) was developed by J. Kevin Thompson, Patricia van den Berg, Megan Roehrig, Angela S. Guarda, Leslie J. Heinberg (2003). It is designed to measure Sociocultural attitudes towards appearance. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Internalization-General, Internalization-Athlete, Pressures, Information.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Definitely Disagree, 2 = Mostly Disagree, 3 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 4 = Mostly Agree, 5 = Definitely Agree.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 30 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low internalization and pressure: 30 – 70
- Moderate internalization and pressure: 71 – 110
- High internalization and pressure: 111 – 150
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Good internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
