Scale Overview
The Social Safeness and Pleasure Scale – SSPS was developed by Gilbert, P., McEwan, K., Mitra, R., Richter, A., Franks, L., Mills, A., Bellew, R. & Gale, C. (2009). It is designed to measure Social Safeness and Pleasure. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Almost never, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Almost all the time.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 11 to 55. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Social Safeness: 11 – 25
- Moderate Social Safeness: 26 – 40
- High Social Safeness: 41 – 55
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
