Scale Overview
The Social Phobia Scale – SPS was developed by Richard P. Mattick & John C. Clarke (1998). It is designed to measure Social Phobia (Scrutiny Fear). The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = not at all characteristic or true of me, 1 = slightly characteristic or true of me, 2 = moderately characteristic or true of me, 3 = very characteristic or true of me, 4 = extremely characteristic or true of me.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Below clinical threshold: 0 – 23
- Clinically significant social phobia / scrutiny fear: 24 – 80
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
