Scale Overview
The Social Phobia Inventory – SPIN was developed by Kathryn M. Connor, et al. (2000). It is designed to measure Social Anxiety Disorder. The scale is intended for use with Adults (18+).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Fear, Avoidance, Physiological.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all, 1 = A little bit, 2 = Somewhat, 3 = Very much, 4 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 68. Interpretation guidelines:
- No Social Phobia: 0 – 20
- Mild Social Phobia: 21 – 30
- Moderate Social Phobia: 31 – 40
- Severe Social Phobia: 41 – 50
- Very Severe Social Phobia: 51 – 68
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of α = 0.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
