Scale Overview
The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale – SIAS was developed by Richard P. Mattick & Jean C. Clarke (1989). It is designed to measure Social Interaction Anxiety. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all characteristic or true of me, 1 = Slightly characteristic or true of me, 2 = Moderately characteristic or true of me, 3 = Very characteristic or true of me, 4 = Extremely characteristic or true of me.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 80. Interpretation guidelines:
- Sub-clinical Social Anxiety: 0 – 33
- Clinical Social Anxiety: 34 – 80
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
