Scale Overview
The Social Decentering Scale – SDS was developed by Mark V. Redmond & J.M. Bunyi (1993). It is designed to measure Social Decentering. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Almost never true, 2 = Infrequently true, 3 = Sometimes true, 4 = Frequently true, 5 = Almost always true.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 36 to 180. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Social Decentering: 36 – 84
- Moderate Social Decentering: 85 – 132
- High Social Decentering: 133 – 180
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
