Scale Overview
The Social Control of Children Scale was developed by Sampson, Morenoff & Earls (1999). It is designed to measure Child-centered social control. The scale is intended for use with Neighborhood residents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 3 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 5 = Very likely, 4 = Likely, 3 = Neither likely nor unlikely, 2 = Unlikely, 1 = Very unlikely.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low child-centered social control: 1 – 2
- Moderate child-centered social control: 3 – 3
- High child-centered social control: 4 – 5
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
