Scale Overview
The Singelis Self-Construal Scale – SCS was developed by Theodore M. Singelis (1994). It is designed to measure Self-Construal. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Independent, Interdependent.
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Independent |
1,2,5,7,9,10,13,15,18,20,22,24,25,27,29 |
15 |
| Interdependent |
3,4,6,8,11,12,14,16,17,19,21,23,26,28,30 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 15 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Subscale Score: 15 – 45
- Moderate Subscale Score: 46 – 75
- High Subscale Score: 76 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients typically range from .69 to .74 for Independence and .65 to .74 for Interdependence..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
