The Silver Lining Questionnaire – SLQ was developed by Samantha C. Sodergren and Michael E. Hyland (1997). It is designed to measure Positive interpretation of illness. The scale is intended for use with Individuals experiencing chronic or acute illness.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 38 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 5 = Strongly agree, 4 = Agree, 3 = Not sure, 2 = Disagree, 1 = Strongly disagree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 38 to 190. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low perception of positive illness consequences: 38 – 95
- Moderate perception of positive illness consequences: 96 – 142
- High perception of positive illness consequences: 143 – 190
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
