The Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanic Youth – SASH-Y was developed by Andres Barona & Julie A. Miller (1994). It is designed to measure Acculturation. The scale is intended for use with Hispanic youth.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Only Spanish / All Latinos/Hispanics, 2 = Spanish better than English / More Latinos than Americans, 3 = Both equally / About half and half, 4 = English better than Spanish / More Americans than Latinos, 5 = Only English / All Americans.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Acculturation (Spanish Dominant): 12 – 35
- High Acculturation (English Dominant): 36 – 60
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
