The Sexual Relationship Scale – SRS was developed by William E. Snell, Jr. & Thomas Hughes (1990). It is designed to measure Communal and exchange approaches to sexual relationships. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: The Exchange Approach to Sexual Relations, The Communal Approach to Sexual Relations.

The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.

Total scores range from 0 to 32. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low orientation: 0 – 10
- Moderate orientation: 11 – 21
- High orientation: 22 – 32
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Communal: alpha .78; Exchange: alpha .67.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 12 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
