Scale Overview
The Sexual Relationship Scale – SRS was developed by Thomas G. Hughes & William E. Snell, Jr. (1990). It is designed to measure Communal and exchange sexual relationship orientations. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Communal Approach to Sexual Relations, Exchange Approach to Sexual Relations.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all characteristic of me, 1 = Slightly characteristic of me, 2 = Somewhat characteristic of me, 3 = Moderately characteristic of me, 4 = Very characteristic of me.
The scale includes 11 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 32. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low orientation: 0 – 10
- Moderate orientation: 11 – 21
- High orientation: 22 – 32
