Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Sexual Double Standard Scale – SDSS was developed by Charlene L. Muehlenhard, Debra M. Quackenbush (1996). It is designed to measure Sexual Double Standard. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree Strongly, 1 = Disagree Mildly, 2 = Agree Mildly, 3 = Agree Strongly.
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.

Total scores range from -30 to 48. Interpretation guidelines:
- Reverse Double Standard (greater sexual freedom accepted for women than for men): -30 – -1
- Egalitarian Standards (identical standards for men and women): 0 – 0
- Traditional Double Standard (greater sexual freedom accepted for men than for women): 1 – 48
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .73 for women and .76 for men.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
