Scale Overview
The Sense of Community Index 2 – SCI-2 was developed by David M. Chavis, Kristin S. Lee, & Jerry D. Acosta (2008). It is designed to measure Sense of Community. The scale is intended for use with General population.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Reinforcement of Needs, Membership, Influence, Shared Emotional Connection.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at All, 1 = Somewhat, 2 = Mostly, 3 = Completely.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 72. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Sense of Community: 0 – 24
- Moderate Sense of Community: 25 – 48
- High Sense of Community: 49 – 72
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.94.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
