Scale Overview
The Self-Transcendence Scale – STS was developed by Pamela G. Reed (1986). It is designed to measure Self-transcendence. The scale is intended for use with Adults, including older adults and individuals facing end-of-life or health challenges.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 15 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = Very little, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = Very much.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 15 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Transcendence: 15 – 34
- Moderate Self-Transcendence: 35 – 49
- High Self-Transcendence: 50 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Typically demonstrates strong internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from .80 to .90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
