Self-Regulation Questionnaire – SRQ
Measures the multi-dimensional capacity to plan, guide, and monitor one's own behavior flexibly in the face of changing circumstances.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Self-Regulation Questionnaire – SRQ was developed by J. M. Brown, W. R. Miller, & L. A. Lawendowski (1999). It is designed to measure Self-regulation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 63 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Receiving relevant information, Evaluating the information and comparing it to norms, Triggering change, Searching for options, Formulating a plan, Implementing the plan, Assessing the plan’s effectiveness.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Receiving relevant information | 1,8,15,22,29,36,43,50,57 | 9 |
| Evaluating the information and comparing it to norms | 2,9,16,23,30,37,44,51,58 | 9 |
| Triggering change | 3,10,17,24,31,38,45,52,59 | 9 |
| Searching for options | 4,11,18,25,32,39,46,53,60 | 9 |
| Formulating a plan | 5,12,19,26,33,40,47,54,61 | 9 |
| Implementing the plan | 6,13,20,27,34,41,48,55,62 | 9 |
| Assessing the plan's effectiveness | 7,14,21,28,35,42,49,56,63 | 9 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 26 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 63 to 315. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low (impaired capacity for self-regulation): 63 – 213
- Medium (moderate capacity for self-regulation): 214 – 225
- High (intact capacity for self-regulation): 226 – 315
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ~ .91).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
