Scale Overview
The Self-Presentation Tactics Scale – SPTS was developed by Lee, S., Quigley, B.M., Nesler, M.S., Corbett, A.B., & Tedeschi, J.T. (1999). It is designed to measure Self-presentation tactics. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 63 items organized into 12 factors/subscales: Excuse, Justification, Disclaimer, Self-handicapping, Apology, Ingratiation, Intimidation, Supplication, Entitlement, Enhancement, Blasting, Exemplification.

Response anchors: 1 = Very infrequently, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = Very frequently.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 63 to 567. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low use of self-presentation tactics: 63 – 230
- Moderate use of self-presentation tactics: 231 – 398
- High use of self-presentation tactics: 399 – 567
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Overall alpha = 0.93, Defensive subscale alpha = 0.86, Assertive subscale alpha = 0.91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
