Scale Overview
The Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale – SPCC was developed by James C. McCroskey & Linda L. McCroskey (1988). It is designed to measure Self-perceived communication competence. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Public, Meeting, Group, Dyad, Stranger, Acquaintance, Friend.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Completely incompetent, 100 = Completely competent.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Communication Competence: 0 – 67
- Moderate Communication Competence: 68 – 85
- High Communication Competence: 86 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total alpha .92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
