Scale Overview
The Self-Control Scale – SCS was developed by June P. Tangney, Roy F. Baumeister, Angie Luzio Boone (2004). It is designed to measure Self-control. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all like me, 2 = A little like me, 3 = Somewhat like me, 4 = Mostly like me, 5 = Very much like me.
The scale includes 24 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Control: 1 – 2
- Moderate Self-Control: 3 – 3
- High Self-Control: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
